Anesthesia
It is normal for pet owners to be concerned when their veterinarian recommends a procedure that will require anesthesia. General anesthesia is used every day in most practices. While anesthesia is not totally risk-free, the risk has been greatly reduced by the availability of pre-anesthetic testing, improved anesthetic drugs, state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and increased veterinary expertise. Today, pets of all ages are acceptable candidates for anesthesia.
What Does Anesthesia Do?
Brings about a state of unconsciousness so the patient is not aware of what is going on.
Blocks pain sensation over the entire body.
Brings about muscle relaxation and suppresses reflex movements.
Minimizes anxiety and stress for animal.
Which Procedures May Require Anesthesia?
Surgery – allows for quicker and more successful procedures.
Dental work – allows the thorough cleaning necessary to prevent oral disease.
X-rays – allows higher-quality films with less stress on the patient.
Any procedure that causes your pet pain or anxiety
The type of anesthesia required will vary depending on the procedure being performed and the age and health of your pet. There are different types of anesthetic drugs, including drugs that are injected into a vein or muscle and drugs that are inhaled as a gas. Your veterinarian will determine what is best for your pet. Please do not hesitate to discuss any concerns you may have regarding anesthesia or your pet’s procedure with one of our team members.
